A Nation’s Sorrow: Assessing Han in South Korean Pop Culture

This course will explore the Korean concept of han—a complex emotion of sorrow, anger, grief, and more—and its portrayal in South Korean popular media. We will look at a number of famous (and heartbreaking!) K-dramas, Korean films, and K-pop songs, including the TV show Goblin (2016) and the film 20th Century Girl (2022). With these works, we’ll examine the different types of han that exist and how they connect to the political, social, and economic issues in South Korea. Prior knowledge about South Korea or Korean pop culture is not needed for this class. If you would like to watch shows/movies/music videos—or you just want to have a good cry—feel free to sign up!

Multimedia Studio Art

Whether art is your passion or you just want to try something new, this class is for you! Each week, we will be exploring new mediums such as ceramics, block printing, weaving, and collaging. Class will consist of a quick check-in and tutorial, but will mostly be time to create art! We do not believe in defining art as “good” or “bad,” and hope each student pushes themselves to try something outside of their comfort zone. Supplies will be provided and yours to keep, so just come ready to create!
